Youth Against Crime Project


As crime prevention strategy for demonstrating community Policing, Yac is a school project designed to mentor youths in run down public schools located in inner city communities and poor neighborhoods in Lagos State. Yac involves the use of problem solving techniques in addressing peculiar challenges facing young people in the school.
With a mission to mentor young people in these communities to   develop positive behaviors and attitudes to life by engaging them with activities that would channel their strength and youthful energy into positive use so as to keep them free from crime and violence.  Students work in partnership with law enforcement agencies to design and implement activities that teach security and general safety issues in the school.
 

This project is implemented with the support from Cordaid (Catholic Organisation for Relief and development Aid.
 
YAC is pursued through the following strategies:

  • Quarterly interactive forum,
  • Establishment of drug free clubs in schools
  • Mentoring and coaching exercises
  • Continuous follow up on problems identified and highlighted by the students during the interactive sessions and other activities.

Quarterly interactive forum:

The project brings together students, teachers, administrators, parents, the police and other stakeholders to focus on and identify the school’s problems and develop effective responses to them.
These forums are used as avenues to have experienced counselors and motivational speakers, law enforcement agents, representatives of the government departments and civil society groups, successful people who grew out of slum communities among others invited to speak to the students on various issues, to inspire and educate the students on topics such as: career development, Sexual and substance abuse, truancy, teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, conflict resolutions in schools, Time Management, HIV /Aids , Health and hygiene, general crime and delinquency issues  etc.

Drug Free Clubs:

Drug free Club is an arm of the youth Against Crime project which also makes use of the problem solving approach to attack drug related crimes identified within the school. The Drug free Club has three major Components namely,

  • The Dance and drama
  • The literary and debating
  • The Environmental maintenance group

The Club operates through its different components to preach the message of drug abuse and its consequences using various strategies.
Students are free to join Club at no cost, for all the activities of the club are carried out by the students with the support and backing CLEEN Foundation, the school authority, the NDLEA and other stakeholders.
In the club Students also work together with youth media and literary groups to design activities that raise security consciousness through mass media campaign, peer education and sensitization activities that seek to address anti social behaviors amongst students in the school.

MENTORING AND COACHING EXERCISES:

Facilitation of regular one on one Mentoring and coaching exercises wherein well season resource persons model and guide the students to adopt healthy and positive lifestyles. This involves follow up on students with peculiar problems.

CLEEN hopes to see public schools in Nigeria return to what they used to be in the 70,s both in the quality of education, content of character and in all other forms of learning. Through it series of advocacies to the different education Districts in Lagos state.
