The Office of Research and Planning has, as its primary mission, the collection of data (from both internal and external sources), and the analysis, distribution, and presentation of this information for use in planning, decision-making, and policy formulation at the CLEEN Foundation. The Office is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of vital statistics, and for reporting these data to a broad spectrum of information consumers and also, to assist personnel in other units with research and assessment methodology, evaluation, and analysis. Research and evaluation are the backbone of successful strategies and programs. With extensive expertise ranging from behavioral research to surveys to rapid needs assessments to program evaluation, the Research and Planning Unit of CLEEN Foundation helps ensure that strategies and programs are firmly grounded in knowledge and are effective tools in the effort to improve lives.
Among its recent works is the concluded first part of the National Crime Victimization Survey (click on link for detailed report), proposed for the years 2005 and 2006. The objectives of the survey were:
- To generate complementary data to official statistics on crime, disorder and fear of crime levels in Nigeria and their geographic, age and gender distributions which would assist policy makers in crime prevention and control planning and programming.
- Provide the Nigeria Police Force with an information base that would help it in deployment of policing resources to areas where they are mostly needed as well as gauge community feedback and attitude towards its services.
- Encourage community involvement in the determination of policing priorities in Nigeria.
- Contribute in reducing the high level of fear of crime and low perception of safety in Nigeria and by so doing, improve peoples’ quality of life in the country.
The second part of the survey is scheduled to start in the last quarter of the year 2006.
